New beginnings

I’m sure there’s some art-marketing wisdom that says not to lead with your early pieces, the ones with more sentimental than artistic value. But here it is, the painting that sparked my journey in the intuitive approach to making art.

This painting tells the story that it’s never too late to embrace a new beginning.

For years I’d wanted to draw and paint more, but struggled to decide on my subject and where to start. Sometimes I’d finish a little sketch or start a painting, but more often the art supplies were packed away again untouched. I told myself, “some day.” Some day when I wasn’t working long hours and neck-deep in chores. Then I’d have time to finally do the art degree. And then I’d know what to do.

In 2018 my friend invited me to an intuitive art workshop she was organising, with Waroona artist Lesley Austin. On a whim, without any great expectations or indeed any clue what intuitive art was, I thought, “why not?”

Lesley introduced me to the idea that I didn’t need a plan to start! She guided us through her process and suggested other intuitive artists whose processes we could explore online. By the time I left I had a solid kangaroo painting underway and was filled with inspiration and joy. Just like that I was making art again. Not “some day” and certainly not everyday then, but whenever I could.

Intuitive art isn’t one particular style. It can be abstract or realistic, simple or intricate, neutral or bright. Intuitive art is an approach, a “way in” to creating art in your own unique expression.

It’s my privilege and pleasure to share my art with you, and I hope to encourage anyone who’s feeling stuck the way I was. You can connect with me here.
